As you may already know, many movies have been made in attempts to recount military occurrences such as the two world wars, the Vietnam War and the Korean war. There has also been those that portray military events that happened on a smaller scale but with big impact.
If you have been looking for your next movie about the military to watch, here are the very best:
Saving Private Ryan (1998)
When veterans applaud a movie based on the military, then you know the filmmakers got all the boxes right. Saving Private Ryan was released in 1998 amid massive veteran acclaim. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the movie is set to depict the Invasion of Normandy in World War II. In the film, a U.S. Army Rangers squad is searching for Private First Class James Ryan, a paratrooper. Spielberg’s portrayal of the beach battle is realistic and very accurate. The movie starsTom Hanks, Matt Damon, Tom Sizemore and Edward Burns. Twenty years later, this movie is still considered one of the greatest films ever, and not just in the military bracket.
The Hurt Locker (2009)
Not many people come even near to imagining the kind of psychological paces that soldiers go through in various battles. In this film that won the Best Picture award at the Oscars with its director, Kathryn Bigelow becoming the first woman to win an Oscar for best director, the psychological cost of war is well presented. The film revolves around soldiers serving in Baghdad, who are sent to dispose of booby traps and bombs. The movie is highly suspenseful and keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.
We Were Soldiers (2002)
Starring Mel Gibson, We Were Soldiers is a 2002 American war film from director Randall Wallace. The movie was made to dramatize the Battle of la Drang which was part of the Vietnam War in November 1965. This was the first major battle that the Americans took part in during the Vietnam War. It was based on the book We Were Soldiers Once…and Young, which was authored in 1992 by Lieutenant General (Ret.) Hal Moore and Joseph L. Galloway, a reporter. Gibson portrays Lt. Hal Moore as he led his unit in this battle. This is another movie about the military that got it right. After all, it was based on the story of someone who was in the middle of the conflict itself.
Fury depicts US tank crews during the world war II, in Nazi Germany. The story follows tank commander Don ‘Wardaddy’ Collier as he leads his tank crew deeper into Germany. Collier is played by Brad Pitt. The movie does a great depiction of the camaraderie between soldiers during war, and how they pull together as a team.
Each of these movies will draw you into the action, a great way to relive history and appreciate the sacrifice that soldiers make on a daily basis.
